Intellectual Humility

Imam Shafi’i said something to the effect of…

“I would only enter a debate with someone if I was certain the truth would end up on their lips.” I’ve reached a point where I find no value in arguing with anyone about the deen, and I spend very little time with people who do. As a result people find it very annoying that they can’t figure out which label to put on me: ‘salafi’, ‘sufi’, ‘brelwi’, ‘naqshbandi’ etc.

The truth is, all of these labels are just identification strategies, that we made unconsciously, in order to fit in with a group of people we like, or in order to separate ourselves from a group of people we don’t like. My problem is: I like everyone who reads this blog ;)

    SubhanAllah.
This the stage I have reached. It seems everyone
Is a scholar, sheikh or teacher….. Unfortunately
Their actions don’t match their words. They seem
    To know it all….

    Intellectual Humility
A Message To The ”Facebook Shaykhs” – Nouman Ali Khan.

    Jazak Allah Khaire!

This video and its message says it all…. The more knowledge we gain, the more humble we need to become. When we learn something from the holy Quran, we think we understand the meaning and the concept behind it.But when you contemplate on that one particular verse you realise that your knowledge is nothing. “Above everyone who has knowledge there is someone who has more” How true! This short but very profound video does make you feel humble.

Sheikh Waleed Basyouni said: “Imam Ibn Al-Rajab said, “‘ilm is three stages. Whoever enters the first stage becomes arrogant.” This is very natural. When you see people start learning physics, medicine, or whatever field of knowledge, in the beginning you are arrogant because you think you know everything. “Whoever enters the second stage humbles himself. Whoever enters the third stage realizes his or her ignorance.” You are exposed to a mountain of knowledge, and you compare whatever you have acquired over all of these years to what is out there. You realize there is so much knowledge out there. Imagine the knowledge of all of humanity together, and compare it to the knowledge of Allāh (subḥānahu wa ta‘āla) and it is nothing.”

Salaam Fawzy,Thank you for your post! I too feel the 15, 16 and 17th juz hold a sepaicl place, esepaiclly surah Maryam and Kahf. It is like your example of the dhikr routine and how you can never run out of blessings to count, you can never run out of wisdoms to extract from these chapters. I’m going to try out your dhikr tip the next time I have an extended amount of downtime, inshaAllah. Thanks for sharing

This is a great atilcre. The people interviewed provided great commentary, but now something needs to be done about it. Education begins at home. There needs to be a very large public campaign promoting save and courteous driving. This must be done all year round, not just during safe driving week. Secondly, education in schools can influence the next generation so that they can see the benefits of better road safety. Driving attitudes need to change among all drivers, nationals and expats. Instead of using those hugh billboards to advertise the Pearl, use them to promote better driving; no use of mobiles, driving in the correct lanes; not flashing lights; using headlights when driving at dusk, in the dark, and in the fog. The State of Qatar must enforce strict regulations for all. There should be no wasta! Advertise how many have died, how many are maimed, how many are in a vegetative state for the rest of their lives. Do not hide the facts broadcast them so we be come more responsible to ourselves, our families, and all drivers and pedestrians in Qatar. Use slogans like Drive safely, arrive alive! Let it ring so our children can sing. Slow and steady wins the race; crazy driving is a killer’s chase! Great work students.
